By default, after installing linux we have 6 consoles available. This number seems sufficient, especially at the beginning of one's adventure with linux, but why not have more, if the system gives us that option. We perform all operations with root privileges. The first step is editing the file /etc/inittab; we look for c6:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux
Now we need to add further lines:
c8:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty8 linux
c9:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty9 linux
c10:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty10 linux
c11:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty11 linux
By default console 7 is reserved by the X server. Optionally we can add console 7 too, in which case the X server will be moved to the next free one not listed in the inittab file. Once we've made all the changes, we save the file and in the console issue the command: killall -HUP init. We now have 11 active consoles. We'll dedicate the next console to system logs.
